Phosphating
Phosphate coatings have a wide field of application in the manufacturing industry, both as an aid to mechanical production operation and in surface finishing. In this process iron or steel articles were treated by immersion in a hot.
Formulations based upon iron or manganese phosphate are mainly applicable to iron and steel articles and those based upon zinc phosphate may also used for the production of the phosphate coatings upon zinc surfaces. For protection against the atmospheric corrosion, lightweight coatings may be employed to give temporary protection during storage and between production stages.
When combined with a black stain these coatings are used in areas where there is severe corrosion but also a requirement for a smart appearance such as under bonnet engine components for motor cars. The lightweight zinc phosphate coatings have fine crystalline structure within the range 1-30 g/m.sq(100-3000mg/sq.ft) which provide an effective base for forming lubricants and soaps and rust preventative compounds.
